Meanings of Some V-Day
Symbols |
| Cupid |
In the Roman version, Cupid was the
son of Venus (goddess of love) and Mars. In the Greek version he was
named Eros. Cupid was often depicted with wings, a bow, and a quiver
of arrows.
|
| Heart |
The heart has long been used as a
symbol to refer to the spiritual, emotional, moral, and in the past
also intellectual core of a human being. The word heart
continues to be used poetically to refer to the soul, and stylized
depictions of hearts are used as prevalent symbols representing
love.

| Ishtar |
Ishtar was above all associated
with sexuality: her cult involved sacred prostitution; her holy city
Uruk was called the "town of the sacred courtesans"; and she herself
was the "courtesan of the gods".

| XOXO |
Hugs and kisses is a term for a
sequence of the letters X and O, e.g. XOXO,
typically to express affection or good friendship at the end of a
written letter, email or SMS text message, in which, according to
most sources, "x" means kisses and "o" means hugs. The use of "x" to
signify a kiss is more long-standing than the use of "o", dating
back at least to 1763.
