As we celebrate the contributions and heritage of Native Americans during this month, we also recommit to supporting tribal self-determination, security, and prosperity for all Native Americans. While we cannot erase the scourges or broken promises of our past, we will move ahead together in writing a new, brighter chapter in our joint history.
National Native
American Heritage Month is celebrated in the month of
November, which is to honor and recognize the original
peoples of this land. In 1990 President George H. W.
Bush approved a joint resolution designating November
1990 "National American Indian Heritage Month." Similar
proclamations, under variants on the name (including
"Native American Heritage Month" and "National American
Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month") have been
issued each year since 1994.
