SELENA QUINTANILLA

Selena was a famous tejano singer.  She was also known as the "Queen of Tejano".  Her fame grew throughout the 1990s but more over Spanish speaking countries.  Selena was born in Lake Jackson, Texas. She began singing at six years old and was in the band "Selena y Los Dinos" at age nine.  At the Tejano Music Awards in 1987 she won best female vocalist and dominated for the next seven years.  In 1988 Selena met Chris Perez which joined their band two years later.  Her and Chris quickly fell in love but her father did not approve which resulted in him firing Chris from the band.  Selena and Chris were married April 2, 1992.  Yolanda Saldivar approached Selena's father about starting a fan club and she became the president.  Yolanda later became the manager of Selena's clothing boutiques.  Selena earned over five million dollars from the two boutiques.  She worked on an English album due to release in 1995 and also did another tejano album so her fans would not think she was turning her back on them.  In early 1995,  they found out that Yolanda was embezzling money from the stores and decided to fire her.  After the fallout Selena agreed to meet with Yolanda at a Days Inn hotel in Corpus Christi to retrieve paperwork for tax purposes. Yolanda delayed the handover and Selena told her "she couldn't be trusted".  As Selena turned around to walk out the door Yolanda shot her in the back.  Selena was later pronounced dead in the hospital after too much blood loss.  After her death her album Dreaming of You peaked at number one on the Billboard charts making her the first female Hispanic to accomplish this.  A biopic was later made about Selena's life and Jennifer Lopez played the leading role.
