The term Hispanic refers to Spanish-speaking people in the United States of any
race. Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15, the anniversary of
independence for five Latin American countries—Costa Rica, El Salvador,
Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico declared its
independence on September 16, Chile on September 18, and Belize on September 21.
It is the period to recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the
United States and to celebrate Hispanic heritage and culture. It was started in
1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week by president Lyndon Johnson. It was later
expanded by president Ronald Reagan in 1988. It covers a 30 day period starting
on September 15 and ending on October 15.
