Sonia Maria Sotomayor, born June 25, 1954, is the first Hispanic, man or woman,
to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States. Raised in the Bronx borough
of New York City, Sotomayor attended Princeton University and graduated with a
Bachelor of Arts degree, after which she attended Yale Law School and earned her
Juris Doctor.
Sotomayor served
as judge on the U.S. District Court for the Southern
District of New York, which was where she ended the MLB
strike of 1994, one of her more notable rulings. In 1997,
Sotomayor was nominated by President Clinton for, and in
1998 approved, a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the
Second Circuit. Then in April 2009, Sonia Sotomayor was
nominated by President Obama to fill the spot in the Supreme
Court which was vacated by Justice David Souter. She was
approved on August 6th 2009, making her the first ever
Hispanic to serve on the United States Supreme Court.
