Hispanic Heritage Month
starts on September 15th and lasts into the month of October. This month
celebrates the anniversary of the independence of five Latin American countries
which are Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
Included in this celebration is the Independence of Mexico which on September
16th and Chile which is on September 18th.
This celebration began in 1968 when Congress authorized President Lyndon
B. Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week. In 1988, it was
expanded into a month long celebration (Sept. 15 - Oct. 15). |
