Winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1959

 

 

 

     Severo Ochoa was born on September 24th 1905 at Luarca, Spain.  Severo has great interest in biology, which was influenced by the publications of a neurologist named Ramón y Cajal.  Severo graduated in 1929 and went to work under Otto Meyerhof to work on biochemistry and physiology of muscle.  Later on in his life, in 1932, he went o London to work on his first problem in enzymology.  He returned to Madrid, Spain in 1934, and was appointed Severo times in many institutes and universities. Three years before, he married Carmen Garcia Cobian. 

      He arrived in America in 1941 to work on his interest in enzymatic mechanisms of oxidative metabolisms.  due to this work, Severo was appointed professor of many things such as Pharmacology and Biochemistry.  Due to this work, he has contributed to the understanding of  carbohydrates and fatty acids, the use of carbon dioxide and the biosynthesis of nucleic acids. 

      He was awarded many medals and memberships.  He won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or medicine in 1959.  He became a citizen of the United States of America in 1956.  Sadly, Severo Ochoa died on November 1, 1993 with a lifetime of accomplishments which continue to help us till today.
