Hispanic Heritage month is the period where
we recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United
States and to celebrate Hispanic heritage and culture. It occurs
September 15 to October 15. The celebration began in 1968 when President
Lyndon B. Johnson introduced National Hispanic Heritage Week. Then in
1988 it was extended to be a month long celebration. September 15 was chosen as the mark of the
celebration because it is the date where five Latin American countries,
Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, gained
their independence.
Pictured below are three famous people of
Hispanic descent: Jennifer Lopez, Oscar de la Hoya, and Sonia Sotomayor.
