Frida Kahlo was born in Mexico City on July 6, 1907. When Frida was six she was diagnosed with polio which made her right leg appear thinner than the left leg for the rest of her life. She attended the National Preparatory School and when Frida was 18 she was in a bus accident. She sustained many injuries including a broken collarbone, ribs and pelvis, her spinal column was broken in three places, her foot was dislocated and crushed, and a handrail pierced her abdomen. It was unlikely that she would live, much less walk again, but she made a full recovery. Because of her accident, she had relapse and tremendous pain for the rest of her life and underwent about 30 operations. While healing, she spent most of her time in bed painting. Of the 150 of her works that have survived, the majority are self portraits. Frida used her emotions to create her paintings which were often made on sheet metal rather than canvas. After being introduced by a friend, Frida and her husband, Diego Rivera, were married on August 21, 1929. In 1940 they divorced but were remarried only a year later. Frida died in 1954 after having her leg amputated and suffering from pneumonia. If her death was a suicide still remains unknown since no official autopsy was preformed.
