In 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson
proclaimed one week in September as National Hispanic Heritage week.
Twenty years later in 1988 the observance was expanded to a month
long celebration. Now, Hispanic Heritage month is celebrated each
year from September 15 to October 15. Costa Rica, El Salvador,
Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua are all Latin American countries
that celebrate the anniversary of their independence on September
15, which is why the date was chosen to celebrate Hispanic Heritage.
During this time, they have special programs, events, and exhibits,
that celebrate heritage, culture, spirit, and contributions of
Hispanic Americans.
