Oscar De La Hoya was born February
4, 1973 in Los Angeles, California. Boxing was a De La
Hoya family tradition. His father was an amateur
featherweight and had a professional career in the
United States. Oscar won the gold medal in boxing at the
1992 Olympic Games and he was nicknamed the " Golden
Boy". He furthered his career in professional boxing
winning several title fights; but he was also popular
with the media. His good looks, rags to riches life
story, and charming personality made him one of the most
liked boxers. He retired in December 2008, after being
knocked out by Manny Pacquiao, but gained a 20 million
dollar pay day.
