Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from September 15-October 15. It is defined
as the period to recognize the contributions of Hispanic
Americans to America and to celebrate their heritage and culture. The
celebration was started by
President Lyndon Johnson in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage
Week, and was then expanded by Ronald Regan to cover a 30-day period. September 15 was chosen as the starting date
as
it coincides with the celebration of independence of five Latin American countries:
Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala,Honduras, and Costa Rica.
