Alberto Salazar |
|
Alberto Salazar was the best marathoner of the early
to mid 80's. Salazar was born on August 7, 1958 in Havana, Ciudad de la
Habana, Cuba. In the beginning he was a high school standout by winning
the state championship in 1975. To better his skills Salazar trained
with the Boston Track Club. He was a distance runner at University of
Oregon, winning 1978 NCAA cross-country race. In 1980, Salazar began his
marathon career in New York. He was TAC 10K champion in 1981 and 1983.
In the 90's Salazar began running ultra distance events and in 1994
he won the comrades marathon in south Africa. One of his most famous
quote's was "An athlete who
tells you the training is always easy and always fun simply
hasn't been there. Goals can be elusive which makes
the difficult journey all the more rewarding.”
