Hispanic Heritage Month

A month-long celebration of the history, achievements, culture, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

What is Hispanic Heritage Month?

Hispanic Heritage Month begins on 15 September, the day of independence for five Latin American countries: El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. Mexico won its independence on September 16, while Chile gained its freedom on  September 18. Hispanic Heritage Month is a month-long celebration of the history, achievements, culture, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

Many Hispanic figures have made countless contributions to our society and profoundly influenced American communities through avenues such as the arts, politics, and law. Each day, Hispanic culture continues to shape the American experience with a strong commitment to family, love of country, and respect for others.

Jennifer Lopez, Sandra Cisneros, and Penelope Cruz are all Hispanics who celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. They also make their culture known to everyone to show their appreciation for where they came from.
